In an age of emails, DMs and online applications, it’s easy to forget one simple but powerful job-hunting tool: the phone call. It might feel a bit old-school, but following up with a quick phone call could be the thing that sets you apart from dozens (or even hundreds) of other applicants.
So, why don’t more candidates do it? Sometimes it’s nerves. Sometimes it’s not wanting to seem “pushy.” But here’s the thing: when done right, a polite follow-up call can show initiative, confidence, and genuine interest in the role — all qualities employers love.
Why It Matters
Employers are busy. They receive CVs in bulk and sometimes rely on tech or tired eyes to screen applications. But when your name comes up in a well-timed call, it brings your application to life. It gives you a chance to express your enthusiasm and maybe even get your name remembered before the shortlisting process begins.
What Should You Say?
It doesn’t need to be a big speech. Keep it simple:
“Hi, I just wanted to follow up on the [Job Title] role I applied for. I’m really interested in the position and would love the opportunity to speak with someone about it. I’d be happy to provide any more information or answer any questions.”
That’s it — confident, concise and polite.
When Should You Call?
- Around 2–3 days after applying (unless the job ad says no calls, of course).
- After an interview, to thank them for their time and reaffirm your interest.
- If you’ve not heard anything back after a week or two and want to check in.
