Big changes are on the horizon for businesses, with increases to the National Living Wage (NLW) and employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) coming soon. While these updates aim to improve the quality of life for workers, they also bring challenges for businesses balancing rising costs with delivering great products and services.
If you’re a local business owner like me, you might be wondering: How will these changes affect my business, and what can I do to adapt without compromising on quality or customer service?
What’s Changing?
From April 2024, the NLW will rise from £11.44 to £12.21 per hour. That’s a significant jump, especially for businesses in sectors like hospitality, retail, and wholesale, where wages often make up a big part of overall costs. Then, from April 2025, employers will see their NICs increase from 13.8% to 15%. On top of that, the threshold for NIC contributions will drop, meaning businesses will start paying NICs on earnings over £5,000 instead of £9,100.
While small businesses might benefit from an increased Employment Allowance (rising to £10,500 per year), mid-sized and larger companies, especially those in lower-wage sectors, are likely to feel the squeeze.
